The Watch Come Inside Me 3end of Thor: Ragnarokleft our mightiest hero down a planet, an eye, and a hammer -- but judging by a new batch of Avengers photos, two of those things might be more replaceable than we thought.
In October, Marvel reportedly brought 83 of its big screen heroes together for a photo shoot to commemorate 10 years of the studio's game-changing Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Vanity Fairwas on hand to snap an exclusive portfolio with 32 of them for the magazine's latest cover story.

The new photos offer some tantalizing hints about Avengers: Infinity War, next year's much-hyped team-up between the MCU's countless heroes: Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow is sporting a new blonde makeover, as teased in the Infinity Warfootage previewed at D23 and the poster revealed at San Diego Comic-Con earlier this year -- but Thor's look is particularly noticeable following the events of Ragnarok.
(It's worth pointing out that Chris Evans is not sporting the scruffy beard that Captain America was rocking in the D23 footage and Comic-Con poster, but it's probably not a spoiler to assume that he'll shave at some point between Infinity War and Avengers 4.)

After losing an eye in the battle with Hela, Thor ended Ragnarokwith a nifty new eyepatch reminiscent of his father's, and star Chris Hemsworth recently told EWthat Thor would still be wearing said eyepatch in Infinity War: "Yeah we carry it into the film with the eye patch you see in this film."
But that doesn't mean he'll be sporting it the whole time -- in the Vanity Fairphotos, Hemsworth is rocking a distinctive scar over his right eye instead of a patch; not the kind of thing Marvel would add for a photo shoot if it didn't hold some significance, since it would've drawn less attention to just leave Hemsworth's otherwise flawless face untouched.
The gallery also features Hemsworth with Thor's beloved hammer, Mjolnir, which Hela crushed like a nut in Ragnarok. Vanity Fairis quick to note that while the hammer and Thor's dramatic cape "may be back for the photo shoot ... that doesn’t mean they’ll return in Avengers: Infinity War,"but given the merchandising possibilities of Mjolnir -- and its significance in Thor's comic book canon -- we wouldn't count it out completely.

But what could give Thor back an eye? The most obvious answer is one of the Infinity Stones -- the six powerful gems that Thanos is looking to acquire to complete his Infinity Gauntlet in the next two Avengersfilms.
Five of the stones are accounted for going into Infinity War: Loki swiped the Tesseract (aka the Space Stone) at the end of Ragnarokbefore Asgard was destroyed; Vision currently wields the Mind Stone, which was embedded in his head in Age of Ultron; the Reality Stone was given to The Collector at the end of Thor: The Dark World, although his museum has now been destroyed, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ; the Power Stone has been in the possession of the Nova Corps on Xandar since Guardians of the Galaxy; and the Time Stone is currently in the hands of Doctor Strange, hidden in the Eye of Agamotto (which Benedict Cumberbatch is wearing in the Vanity Fairphotos). The Soul Stone is still up for grabs, and may be introduced in Black Pantheror saved forInfinity Waritself.
SEE ALSO: 'Infinity War' teaser puts Avengers, Spider-Man and Guardians of the Galaxy together at lastAll of the stones hold incredible power, so it's not much of a reach to imagine they could regrow body parts (or a hammer!). The post credits scene for Ragnaroksaw a gigantic ship approaching Thor and Loki's stolen vessel, implying that the Asgardians were about to have a close encounter with Thanos himself, while the D23 footage from Infinity War featured Thor (with both eyes) floating through space and landing on the windshield of the Milano before being pulled inside by the Guardians.
Maybe Thanos makes a gesture of goodwill by giving Thor back his eye in the hope of acquiring one of the stones, but then negotiations go south, leaving our long-suffering God of Thunder adrift in a sea of Asgardian debris? (Or maybe Rocket Racoon, who has a thing for snatching prosthetics, is also good at installing them?)
The newly released trailer for Avengers: Infinity Warshows Thor with an eyepatch, marking a change from the footage shown at the conventions -- which makes sense, since Marvel wouldn't want to spoil the ending of Ragnarokin a teaser months in advance -- but that still doesn't explain the new scar. Plus, Marvel has been known to mislead viewers in its trailers before (like hiding the lossof Thor's eye from the Ragnarokpromos).
Thankfully, we don't have too long to wait for answers -- Avengers: Infinity Warhits theaters on May 4, 2018.
