"I think he was actually being a gentleman," May told Vogue. Journalist Gaby Wood wrote that May was "laughing off this gesture" as she spoke.
"We were about to walk down a ramp, and he said it might be a bit awkward," May continued. May is the first British prime minister to appear on the cover of American Vogue,and the photos were shot by Annie Leibovitz.

Asked what she made of Trump, May says the pair got along.
"I like to think we got on," said May. "I mean, obviously he has, uh ... it was a stunning election victory, in that he’s someone who has not been involved in politics."
Prior to Trump's election, May had stated Trump's "grab them by the pussy" comments were "unacceptable." But, asked if those remarks came up in conversation, May said she'd kept private conversations out of it.
"We don’t comment on private conversations that take place. All I would say is, I’ve been very clear: I’m not afraid to raise issues. And the nature of the relationship is such that we should be able to be frank and open with each other," says May.
