LONDON -- RuPaul is Watch Hollywood Sex Fantasy (2001)my life. Not a day goes by without him providing me with some joy. And, I know I'm not alone in this.
As the most famous drag queen in the world, Ru brought drag culture to mainstream television.
SEE ALSO: 'Ru Paul's Drag Race' is already off to a fabulously GIF-able startIf I'm not binge-watching episodes of RuPaul's Drag Raceon Netflix, I'm listening to his podcast "What's The Tee with Michelle Visage" or favouriting his tweets.
RuPaul's Twitter feed is resplendent with his signature sharp wit, but he also imparts empowering advice and wisdom. Because, RuPaul isn't just an entertainer, he's an inspiration.
As our summer slowly slips from our grasp, I can see the smiles of my colleagues gradually fading. I knew they needed a perk to cheer them right up, and RuPaul's tweets would be just the thing to do it.
The pressure was on. Would I be able to bring others the same level of happiness that RuPaul brings to me and countless others? Probably not. But I was ready to give it a go.
Via GiphyThe only problem was -- not all of my colleagues really understood what I was up to. Like, at all.
If you wanna be like Ru, you gotta have some key qualities -- four, to be precise. And those qualities go by the name of charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talent. I knew I needed to carefully select the tweets that exemplified all of those traits. I scoured RuPaul's Twitter feed and found examples of his charismatic and unique twittering. Like this:
This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed.
I knew that if I were to be true to Ru, I needed to follow some fundamental rules...
The rules:
Be positive.Like Ru always says: "Throwing shade takes a bit of creativity, being a bitch takes none".
Be inspiring. He's nothing short of inspiring, and his tweets are infused with that fighting spirit that makes him such an important role model.
Be wise.RuPaul has been in the game (of showbiz, that is) for a good while now. And, he's picked up some valuable knowledge and insights along the way. Ru shares advice that's worth listening to. I needed to do the same.
Be entertaining. You don't get to be as famous as Ru with out being entertain(t)ing AF. Whether he's dropping puns, attributing fake quotes to historic peeps or just being his fabulously witty self, his Twitter feed is a window on his comedic genius. In short, if you're gonna be Ru, you need to be funny as fuck.
Once I'd eaten my porridge and fired off a few emails, I thought that Sam Haysom -- Mashable UK's Senior Culture Reporter -- really needed some stellar RuPaul wisdom. Sam's a kindhearted, wonderful soul, and I really thought he'd appreciate a little boost of inspiration. Did it go as planned? Well, in a word, no.
Sam's "eh" was accompanied with a verbal "what you on about?" which was muttered to me from across the table. I bet Ru doesn't get asked questions like these. I'm merely trying to spread some wisdom, Sam. Don't shoot the messenger.
Via GiphyNext up on my list of joy recipients was Mashable UK's Video Producer Nikolay Nikolov. He usually spends his morning in complete and utter silence -- something that feels entirely foreign to me. I decided it was time to disrupt that silence with some advice from Ru.
This advice, however, was met with stone, cold silence. Brutal. But, just like Ru didn't give up on Shangela, I refuse to give up on Nikolay.
Via GiphyI have a brother called Jamie and his sense of humour is dry as a bone. As the older sister, I should be able to give advice, words of wisdom and inspiration, but does he listen? Hell no. In fact, he usually asks me if I have taken leave of my senses. This time was no different.
While my colleagues were hard at work, I thought it might be useful to infuse our Slack channel with some beauty knowledge for them to read and take on board. Because reading is what? FUNDAMENTAL.
Thankfully Liza Hearon -- Mashable UK's Deputy Editor -- really appreciated this nugget of wisdom. As for the guys, however, I got nothing but some shady shade from them.
Via GiphyMums are the best. My mum -- Nancy -- always appreciates positivity and she loves dancing. After being brutally rebuffed by my colleagues, I was relieved and touched to receive the positive reinforcement I so desperately needed. Thanks Mum!
Once I'd finished my lunch of orange tic tacs, I set about on my mission to elevate and inspire. Gianluca Mezzofiore -- Mashable'sRealtime News Reporter -- was next in line.
RuPaul is one prepared individual, Gianluca. What's not to understand? We should all get packing right now.
Obviously I wasn't quite done with Nikolay.
Elisha -- Mashable'sSenior Creative Strategist -- is my work BFF. Like, I don't mean to brag or anything but we went to Bali, Indonesia, together. Elisha knows me well enough to see straight through me, and she certainly was notbuying this 100% genuine quote from Abraham Lincoln. Personally, I don't see what the problem is, though.
At around 2:30 p.m. I became acutely aware that I had kept my RuPaul communications to a strict UK audience. I decided that my New York-based colleague Annie Colbert -- Mashable'sViral Content Editor -- needed some on-point business advice.
Annie was in complete agreement with me (and Ru), which left me feeling pretty great. Things were getting better!
Andrew Freedman is Mashable's Science Editor. He likes to talk about the weather and stuff, so I thought he'd really love this tweet from Ru.
However, this amazing piece of knowledge about global warming -- something that is so very real -- was met with no response. It's OK, Andrew. I know you're busy. Really, I'm fine.
Mashable's Chief Content Officer Greg Gittrich is a very busy man. But sometimes the busiest people need to be reminded of what's real. Like making sure they're always on point. So -- true to RuPaul form -- I got in touch with him to make him aware. These things matter, Greg.
He listened to my advice, thankfully. And I know he took it on board. Phew.
All in all, I think my love for RuPaul actually grew as I entered his wonderful psyche. But I also learned a valuable life lesson.
I knew what it felt like to share the love without the need for anything in return. If my positive words weren't returned, that was OK. Because I believed every word of what I said.
When my efforts were rebuffed, I did precisely what Ru would do -- I smiled, flicked my hair and I walked away. There's a lot to be said for turning the other cheek. The people that listen to your words are the people that count. Those who don't, well they can just sashay away.
