During the 69th Emmy Awards,Sex in the Game (2017) an unexpected hashtag began trending thanks to comedians Dave Chappelle and John Oliver.
Chappelle, a former student of the Washington D.C. public school district, gave a shoutout to the schools in the district during his moment on stage with Melissa McCarthy.
“We’re dancing, Melissa. Now we’re going to read this teleprompter. Shoutout to DC Public Schools,” Chappelle said, in an apparently unrehearsed moment.
Later in the program upon winning an award for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series, Oliver squeezed in shoutout to the D.C. public schools as well.
"I would like to unexpectedly thank D.C. Public Schools just to get it trending on Twitter for no reason," he said, in reference to Chappelle's remarks—and when Oliver issues a command like this, it usually happens pretty quickly.
