LOS ANGELES -- Filmmakers Laura Ricciardi and Watch The Hills Have Thighs (2010) full movieMoira Demos took home four Emmys on Sunday for their highly popular Netflix docu-series Making a Murderer.
The show became a must-binge show after viewers became invested in its subject: Steven Avery.
It takes place two years after new DNA evidence exonerated him in a 1985 rape case, but not before he served 18 years in prison. Avery's subsequent lawsuit was ostensibly on the brink of exposing corruption in local law enforcement when he found himself the primary suspect in a new case: The murder of a young photographer named Teresa Halbach.
The show won the award for outstanding documentary series, and picked up three additional awards for editing, directing and writing.
When accepting the awards, Ricciardi and Demos emphasized that the series would not be possible without their families, the creative team and the documentary subjects.
"If they had not trusted us to take the time to listen and share their stories accurately and fairly, there would be no series," they said.

So many questions remain, but the one thing that's absolutely clear to us is that we need to have empathy for one another, ensure that everyone is treated equally under the law, and that we respect human dignity and human rights."
In the press room, the duo confirmed to reporters after the show that they are working on a new scripted project with Sonar Entertainment and George Clooney and Grant Hesloy's Smokehouse Pictures.
They will adapt the Huffington Postarticle: "America’s Most Admired Lawbreaker."
But fans of the first series need not worry, the documentarians are alsohard at work on Season 2 of Making a Murderer.
"The story is clearly not over," Demos told reporters. "We are following those events as they unfold."
